Sabaudia, Lazio

About an hour south of Anzio on the Mediterranean coast you will find the Parco Nazionale del Circeo, a national park encompassing a large, wooded inland area, as well as a coastal peninsula with a peak rising to 1,500 ft. The peak, Monte Circeo, is topped by a large cross along with a panorama of the plains around Latina, and the coast and popular (read: crowded) beaches.  A short drive along the jagged coastline riddled with grottoes and rocky cliffs provides a spectacular view of the deep blue sea.

You will find three different torri, or towers, along the coastal drive that, in years past, provided advance warning of potential invasion to the town of San Felice di Circeo, a medieval port city on the south side of the peninsula. Two of these torri have been converted into private residences that have spectacular seats to see the rocky shore and western horizon.

An excursion to this park is rewarded with some stunning panoramas, wooded park areas and numerous hiking opportunities. Grottoes along the coastline are sign-posted, so you can hike down and enjoy a swim.

Your visit should start at the on the northern edge of the park at the visitors’ center in the town of Sabaudia with its modern facilities and friendly staff, who will gladly ply you with maps and brochures on the fauna and flora of the parco.
